Cooking is very much an art form, requiring using imaginations and taste buds to come up with new, delicious creations. But baking is more like a science, and although there is certainly room for creativity, there is much about baking that has to do with measurements and proportions of ingredients.
Culinary professionals normally focus on either baking or cooking, although they may dabble a little in both. One such personality is Atemla, a cake maker and decorator, who manages a proprietorship firm called Heaven’s Delight, dealing most of the time in customized cakes and cookies.
From an early age, Atemla elicited a keen interest in creative art. A versatile persona, Atemla experimented with a gamut of creative art, however cooking and baking never featured in her priority list. Her passion for baking developed when she started assisting her sisters in baking. Never having attended any professional courses, the cakes baked in Atemla’s oven received wide acclaim. This is how she ventured seriously into the trade of baking as a commercial activity.
With the blessings and support from family and friends, Atemla - former wedding planner cum dress designer established ‘Heaven’s Delight’ in 2004. Serving high quality, most often customized to suit the occasion and the customers’ choice, bakery products is the Unique Selling Proposition (USP) of Heavens’ Delight. That is because she realized how vital it is to remain in currency and in reckoning. To satisfy health-conscious consumers, Heaven’s Delight offers an extensive line of superior quality, great tasting bakery products that are crafted by real hands with real heart to help build customer satisfaction and drive sales. Advertising only via word-of-mouth, her customized cakes and cookies are currently the entire craze at social events, with cakes being the most favored. Since she operates from home, customers after placing order have the freedom to pick up freshly made cakes at their convenience.
Atemla is all set to expand her business even further by setting up a cookie shop by mid November.
Heavens Delights
- What got you interested in baking?
Atemla:- To be honest, I never really thought I’d be into this business. I enjoyed designing and making dresses and planning weddings but slowly it dawned on me that this (baking) was actually my calling. I am very fickle when it comes to having hobbies but baking is something that never really bores me.
You didn’t take any professional courses in culinary art but ultimately decided to take a career as a cake maker/decorator.
- What made you take that decision and was your family in support of that?
Atemla:- I did study something else; because I initially thought I should have a conventional career. It was a hard decision to make to pursue a career as a cake maker/decorator. However, I made that decision because I had to be true to myself. It’s important for me to decide on something that I am actually happy with. My sisters and parents were very supportive from the beginning.
- What type of cakes do you specialize in?
Atemla:- I specialize in a variety of cakes; every type of celebration cakes including and not just limited to birthday and wedding cakes.
- What makes Heavens Delight’s cakes different?
Atemla:-Since I work from home, I wanted my cakes not just to be pretty looking but taste homely. I try not to compromise on the quality of the ingredients I use. I didn’t want my cakes to be ‘just good’ but great, that’s why I taste myself each time and make changes wherever needed so that I’m not just confident of my products but also make baking a fun experience at home.
- Do you have any immediate diversification plans?
Atemla:-Yes. I took an online course on chocolate and candy making. I have already conducted test marketing of the products and the response is quite encouraging. Eventually, I plan to scale up the production and reach out to a wider customer base.
